CHAPTER 13

“There,” DeeDee said as she finished plating the last dessert. “It’s done.” Each chocolate mousse had a perfect dollop of whipped cream on top. With the added chocolate shavings, it was picture perfect. It couldn’t have looked better if she’d tried. The last course of the meal was prepped and ready to go out, and even if she did say so herself, each one was a work of art.

“Wow, that looks amazing,” Jessica said. “And it smells so good.” Her hand flew to her belly. “I don’t see how either one of you can keep from weighing four hundred pounds.”

She looked longingly at the desserts, as if she were resisting the urge to grab one for herself. DeeDee had to admit that they looked like something that would be on the cover of a food magazine.

“It’s not always easy,” DeeDee confessed. “There have been a couple of times I indulged in a bite or two if there was a little extra. Sometimes you just can’t resist things.”

She began to fan herself with her hand as she felt a bit of sweat run down the back of her neck. Even though it wasn’t hot in the house, after all the cooking and plating she’d just done, she’d worked up a sweat. She looked around for a ceiling fan or something to help move the air around.

“Why don’t you go cool off? Take a quick bathroom break and splash water on your neck,” Susie suggested. “We’ve got this covered.” She looked concerned as she took in DeeDee’s damp hair along the back of her neck.

“The dessert is about to go out. I really shouldn’t,” DeeDee objected, although her bladder was thinking it sounded like a good idea.

“Like I said, we’ve got this. Besides, you might want to freshen up in case someone wants to meet the chef. I know it’s warm in here, and that’s part of the reason I took a bathroom break earlier. Go, it’ll be fine. Nothing is going to happen between now and when you get back.”

Clearly, Susie had noticed DeeDee’s discomfort. It did sound like a good idea, and there really was nothing else to do. She could practically feel the cool water touching her face and neck. There was no reason not to do it.

“If you’re sure,” she said carefully. “I wouldn’t mind a short break.” And some air, she thought.

“Go,” Susie insisted as she shooed her towards the other door. “We’ll be fine. Take your time. You deserve it We would have to deliberately try to mess it up at this point,” she continued. DeeDee walked towards the door, Susie hot on her heels.

“Where’s the bathroom again?” she asked as she put her hand on the door handle.

“Go around the corner, and it’s the first door on the left,” Susie answered.

DeeDee opened the door and stepped out into the hall. Fake trees were staggered along the wide hallway before it turned to the right. The maroon carpet muffled her steps as she left the kitchen.
